4 people you should be close with, in your school, as a new coach.

4 people you should be close with, in your school, as a new coach.

As new, or veteran, coaches we all need help. We need people who are going to help us solve a problem, be there through a hard time or even cover a practice in an emergency. We cannot do it alone and should never pretend to! I have found these, 4 coaching connection with, people/groups have made my coaching experiences better and they do not get the recognition they deserve. Coaching is hard… hard than ever before! Check out this program, Coaching a team who thrives, to make it easier for you.

In my experience,  the behind the scenes queen is our Athletic Directors secretary. When it comes to coaching, if you need something done, don’t know how to do it, who to talk to or where to go? Your AD secretary does. They are the dream supporter of every program. Find them, friend them and do their bidding… because one day when it comes to last minute emergencies they have your back and you’ll need it. Our AD Secretary has been a shoulder to lean on and an open heart more times than I can count for both my athletes and myself. She cares, she bleeds black and gold and at the end of the day is amazing at her job. Know yours, love yours and show them appreciation because they deserve it!

Your custodial crew. Everyone wants to think they are organized, at least I do. Until I return from state is at midnight due to a snow storm, I took off my engagement/wedding rings due to a cut in my hand from when I slipped on ice walking in with our trophy…then left them in the bathroom. I am wearing mine as I type this 6 years later thanks to them! The custodians have your back. They not only set up and take down every event that takes place in the school but they make every event run smoother with extra effort. Know them, appreciate them and bring them coffee!

Your transportation department. When you have to ride 2 hours or more to post season events, knowing your bus drivers helps! Not only will it help making the experience more enjoyable on the drive but having them invested in your team and program gives you one more fan in the stands at the events! There is a bus driver appreciation day every year. Take advantage of that day and show them some appreciation… they deserve it!

Security, not only are they there to keep you safe during events and practice but they can be some of your biggest cheerleaders when you are walking to your game, performance or tournaments. They care about your teams and are always in the building. They also have your back if you are running a few minutes late and can let your athletes into the gym for you. They have a never ending list of jobs but always have a smile on their face and want to see athletes succeed. Never too much help and support thank you security!
